Breaking Silence, Building Hope: The Unstoppable Force of Chong Kim

From Survivor to Changemaker

Chong Kim’s journey is one of extraordinary transformation. A Korean American immigrant and survivor of human trafficking, she has turned her painful past into a mission for justice. Today, she stands as a disabled speaker, author, and advocate who uses her voice to educate, uplift, and empower others. Her strength and empathy—often described as that of a “Velvet Brick”—define her powerful approach to activism, combining compassion with unwavering determination.

Breaking Barriers Through Storytelling

Kim made history as the first Asian American survivor of abuse and trafficking to step into the world of filmmaking. For more than twenty years, she has shared her experience of being groomed, trafficked, and left to navigate life on the streets. Her recovery from addiction and homelessness is a story of endurance and rebirth. This courageous testimony inspired the film Eden, starring Jamie Chung and Beau Bridges, which brought global attention to the realities of human trafficking.

Advocacy Rooted in Action

Through her work, Chong Kim has become a leading voice for systemic reform. She collaborates with law enforcement, educators, and communities to raise awareness about the hidden layers of trafficking, particularly the disturbing statistic that more than 80% of trafficking victims are also incarcerated. Her goal is not only to expose the problem but also to change how society treats and supports survivors.

E40S: Every 40 Seconds Matters

As the founder of E40S LLC, Kim is now developing a feature film titled Every 40 Seconds—a powerful project dedicated to the tens of thousands of missing children in the United States. The film’s title reflects a chilling truth: every 40 seconds, a child goes missing. Through this project, Kim aims to ignite awareness, challenge flawed systems, and inspire a national conversation about prevention and protection.

Healing Through Empowerment

In her memoir Broken Silence, Kim recounts her transformation from victim to survivor, offering a beacon of hope to those facing trauma. Her message resonates with educators, parents, and allies who seek to understand the complex reality of exploitation and recovery. Today, she speaks internationally on trauma healing, disability inclusion, and digital safety, helping others reclaim their power and voice.

Using Art as a Catalyst for Change

Chong Kim views film and storytelling as powerful tools for justice. By turning her experiences into narratives that inform and move audiences, she transforms pain into purpose. Each project she leads—whether on screen or behind the microphone—reflects her commitment to creating empathy, accountability, and change.

A Legacy of Hope and Courage

Chong Kim’s life stands as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to rise from adversity. Through her films, public speaking, and advocacy, she continues to illuminate the path for others to heal, speak out, and find freedom. Her mission is clear: to ensure that no survivor’s voice goes unheard and no child’s story is forgotten.
