In this exclusive interview with Sharina Perry, visionary entrepreneur, sustainability advocate, and the force behind Utopia Plastix—a plant-based innovation reshaping the future of plastics. Recognized globally for her contributions to environmental innovation and social equity, Sharina opens up about her journey, challenges, and her bold mission to create a more sustainable and inclusive world.
Q: Sharina, you’ve been described as a trailblazer in sustainability and innovation. How did your journey begin?
Sharina Perry: I grew up in the American South, where I learned early on what it meant to be an African American woman before being recognized as a businesswoman. That experience gave me a deep understanding of inequity but also lit a fire in me. I’ve spent over 25 years building, owning, and managing national businesses, but everything I’ve done has always been rooted in purpose—addressing real problems and creating solutions that uplift communities.
Q: What inspired you to develop Utopia Plastix?
Sharina Perry: I took a deep dive into studying plant material to understand how certain crops could be used to shrink tumors. In the process of creating a health and wellness line of products, I learned that some of the crops I explored could be an alternative to petroleum, cotton, and wood. A tipping point came when I realized, as a society, we had a cycle of creating problems as we attempted to solve them. The same was true when global attention turned toward the environmental devastation caused by petroleum-based plastics. I asked myself, what if we could replace them with something better while not creating another problem? That led me to develop Utopia Plastix, a plant-based plastic alternative. It’s not just eco-friendly—it’s designed with social equity and economic empowerment in mind. We use USDA-approved crops that absorb more carbon than trees and help restore the soil. That means healthier land, income for farmers, and products that don’t compromise the planet.
Q: You also created something called the “Utopia Model.” Can you tell us more about it?
Sharina Perry: Absolutely. The Utopia Model is a business ecosystem I designed to integrate circular economy principles with social responsibility. It’s a blueprint for sustainable growth that prioritizes community, collaboration, and ethical innovation. It helps companies implement practices that not only reduce waste but also create meaningful economic impact—inclusive of underserved populations.
Q: Your work has received major recognition, including being named Inventor of the Year and featured on the Nasdaq Billboard in Times Square. What does that recognition mean to you?
Sharina Perry: It’s incredibly humbling. When I saw my face on that billboard, I didn’t just see me—I saw every person who has ever dared to believe in what is possible. The recognition affirmed the value of using our God-given gifts. It also reminded me that my responsibility for stewardship is bigger than me. I hope sharing the story of my journey causes every man, woman, and child, no matter their race or socioeconomic status, to see what is possible and that there is no such thing as aiming too high.
Q: What kind of impact are you seeing from Utopia Plastix in real time?
Sharina Perry: The impact has been inspiring. Farmers are gaining access to new revenue streams. Manufacturers are embracing cleaner alternatives. Consumers are more mindful. And the best part is—we’re just getting started. Utopia Plastix is not just a product; it’s a movement. One that’s rooted in science but powered by people.
Q: You’ve spoken at TEDx and delivered keynotes around the world. What message do you hope audiences take away from your talks?
Sharina Perry: That every person has the power to lead with purpose. Innovation doesn’t have to be complicated—it needs to be intentional. I talk a lot about shifting from reactionary problem-solving to visionary thinking. Whether you’re a CEO or a student, you can help create a better world by aligning your values with your actions.
Q: What’s next for you and Utopia Plastix?
Sharina Perry: Scaling sustainably. We’re forming global partnerships, expanding our manufacturing capabilities, and working on new materials for industries beyond packaging—think automotive, agriculture, and textiles. But the heart of it stays the same: empowering people, healing the planet, and creating pathways to prosperity.
Q: If you could send one message to the next generation of innovators, what would it be?
Sharina Perry: Don’t wait for permission to make change. Your voice, your ideas, and your lived experiences are valuable. Use them. And remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. Keep moving forward, and don’t be afraid to build. See you in “Utopia.”
Sharina Perry’s vision is more than an entrepreneurial pursuit—it’s a call to action. Through innovation, integrity, and intention, she’s redefining what’s possible and paving a path toward a more just and sustainable world.
